Fleas and Ticks and Heartworms, Oh My! Protecting Your Pet With Revolution Plus for Cats

Revolution Plus for cats is a newer option in the pet parasite preventive arena, but a great option for many of our feline patients.
The Importance of Parasite Prevention
The goal of wellness care is to prevent problems in our pets where we are able. Parasite control is one area in which we are able to accomplish this very well.
Parasites can lead to serious health issues, so their prevention is a cornerstone of our mission to keep our pet patients happy and healthy. Our main targets include:
- Fleas—These poppy seed-sized external parasites can cause skin irritation and itching. They can also carry parasites such as tapeworms and diseases like Bartonella (cat scratch fever).
- Ticks—These small external parasites attach to available mammals to take blood meals. They can carry serious blood-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and Ehrlichiosis.
- Heartworm—This parasite, transmitted through mosquitoes, can result in the formation of worms that grow in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. There is no known treatment for cats who become infected with heartworm disease and sometimes there is no way to know when it has occurred until serious cardiac consequences, including death, have occurred.
Why Revolution Plus for Cats
Revolution has long been a respected product when it comes to protecting our cats. Our vets have recommended it for many years as the pinnacle of protection when it comes to defense against adult fleas, flea eggs, heartworms, ear mites, and intestinal parasites, roundworms, and hookworms.
Recently, though, Zoetis has released Revolution Plus for cats onto the market. This topically-applied product is an amazing upgrade to Revolution. It has built on the protection already offered through the drug selamectin in traditional Revolution and added an isoxazoline class of parasite prevention called sarolaner.
Dog owners have become very comfortable with isoxazolines in their parasite prevention choices in products such as NexGard, Simparica, Bravecto, Credelio, and Simparica Trio. Now cats can also safely enjoy the benefit of this family of drugs.
By adding sarolaner to Revolution, Revolution Plus is able to provide a more robust flea kill as well as offer tick protection that was previously lacking. Revolution Plus for cats helps to kill and control several tick species including:
- Black-legged tick
- Gulf-coast tick
- American dog tick
We do recommend that indoor and outdoor cats receive quality, year-round parasite prevention as part of their wellness care program.
