Spaying and neutering your puppy or kitten is an essential step towards ensuring their long-term health and well-being.
During your puppy and kitten visits at Animal Medical Hospital & Urgent Care, your doctor will give you more information about the benefits of surgery, timeline of maturity for your pet, and explain setting up a pre-surgical consult. Additionally, spaying and neutering can help alleviate the overpopulation crisis, providing a better future for all animals. What Are the Benefits of Spay and Neuter?
Spay:
- Reduced risk of uterine cancer
- Reduced risk of Pyometra (uterine infection that can be life-threatening)
- Eliminates heat cycle and associated behaviors
- Reduces the likelihood of behavioral issues
- Prevents occurrence of unwanted litters
Neuter:
- Reduced risk of testicular cancer
- Reduced risk of Perianal gland tumors
- Reduces or eliminates spraying or marking territory

Important Information for Your Pet’s Surgery:
- Please ensure your pet’s last meal is at 8:00 p.m. the day before the surgery. For your pet's safety, food must be withheld until after their surgery. Water is okay to leave out.
- Drop off for surgery is from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
- Please notify us of any medications given 24 hours prior to surgery.
- At drop off, allow us a moment to go over paperwork and answer any questions you may have.
- We will call you after your pet has recovered from anesthesia, but you are still welcome to call and check in.
- Once your pet is fully awake from anesthesia, your veterinarian will call you to discuss a pick up time and dismissal from the hospital.
